The reason it is important to consider what filter media to use when we build biological filter systems, is to increase the available surface area for these bacteria to colonize. Rock is an economical media used in pond filters because of rock's low cost and availability. It may seem like good material to use for a biological filter, but rock or crushed gravel is not the only material that can be used as a filter media and can be heavy to take out. BioBalls are fish-safe material that bacteria can attach to and is suitable for filter media in fish ponds. These are convenient for many as they float and when used in a media bag do a great job.
The important consideration is to keep the pollutants and unwanted debris out of our ponds, while keeping the beneficial bacteria in our systems.
A rule of thumb for fresh water ponds is to use about 1 ball for every 2 gallons of water for proper biological filtration.

Bio balls the best
I have two large filters under my gazebo.
One pond is 4000 gallons, the other 3000 gallons. Not your ordinary ponds.
Tried other filtration media (gravel, lava rock and others).
Swimming pool filters can not handle the proper filtering these ponds require. Unless you like to clean pool filters every two days.
Highly recommend.

Pros:Easy to clean the bio balls, light weight, skim the balls out, hose the them down and replace back in the filter. Done for another 8 to 12 months.
